Welcome to UnStuffIt Deluxe 1.0! This application will decompress (unstuff) archive files created with Raymond Lau╒s StuffIt Classic and StuffIt Deluxe programs. The StuffIt programs create a type of file called an archive, which is a collection of files and folders that have been reduced in size through compression. The ╥entries╙ within an archive can optionally be password protected through encryption to keep sensitive documents away from prying eyes.
The hierarchical structure of an archive is similar to that of a folder. This following diagram illustrates what an archive may look like. Most StuffIt archives have names that end with ".sit". Furthermore, all archives are also represented by a unique icon containing a picture of a clamp.

Since StuffIt files can contain more than one item, UnStuffIt Deluxe prompts you to decompress each file or folder from the first ╥level╙. This process allows you to save the decompressed items to any location on your disk and lets you skip the ones you don╒t need. In the example above, you would be prompted to UnStuff Nancy╒s Folder, A Document, and Ken╒s Folder individually. Upon UnStuffing Nancy╒s Folder, you╒ll find the 1988 Sales and 1990 Projections file on your disk inside a new folder, Nancy╒s Folder.

Ñ Using UnStuffIt Deluxe
UnStuffIt Deluxe is very easy to use. Even though you can dive ahead into the program and use it immediately, this walk-through details the steps needed to access any StuffIt Classic or StuffIt Deluxe archive.
1) From the Finder, double-click on the UnStuffIt Deluxe icon. In a few moments you will find yourself in the program.
2) Select ╥UnStuff╔╙ from the File menu and double-click on the archive you want to unstuff from. The first entry in the archive will then be shown in a dialog that looks like the ╥Save╙ dialog that appears in most applications.
3) Click on the ╥UnStuff╙ button to decompress the item to disk or click ╥Skip╙ to go on to the next archive entry. If you want all of the items saved at once, click the ╥UnStuff All╙ button.
4) Repeat the previous step for each file or folder entry within the archive. When you have UnStuffed all the items you need, choose ╥Quit╙ from the File menu.

Both StuffIt Classic and StuffIt Deluxe allow you to protect your archive entries with a password. If you receive a protected archive, StuffIt Classic or StuffIt Deluxe is required (rather than this application, UnStuffIt Deluxe) to access them.
StuffIt Deluxe╒s open-architecture allows for small programs, called externals, to be used to enhance its abilities. UnStuffIt Deluxe does not support these ╥plug-in╙ externals.
Ñ╩About StuffIt Classic and StuffIt Deluxe
In 1987, Raymond Lau introduced the first version of the StuffIt compression and archiving software. National and local electronic bulletin board systems embraced it for its ability to combine multiple files while simultaneously compressing them, which aids in the modem transfer of files. Its ability to segment files into smaller pieces further allows users to get large files onto multiple disks.
In 1989, Raymond Lau teamed up with Aladdin Systems to provide the popular StuffIt (now called StuffIt Classic) and to introduce the next generation of compression, security and archiving software. This new generation of software is called StuffIt Deluxe and was developed to directly address the two potential benefits of compression ╤ increased disk storage space and faster network/communications file transfers. In addition to supplying the fastest and most advanced compression methods, it allows you to transparently Stuff/UnStuff items from the Finder and completely manipulate (sort, copy, move, rename, delete, etc) items within and between archives.
Raymond Lau also worked with Aladdin to develop Shortcut¬, a file/folder navigator that works from every application╒s Open and Save dialog. In addition to being able to jump between frequently used files and folders, its Find command can look into StuffIt archives and decompress their contents without ever leaving the program you╒re using.
StuffIt Classic is available for $25, StuffIt Deluxe retails for $99.95 and the Shortcut software has a list price of $79.95. All products are available from your dealer or directly from Aladdin Systems.
